About
Originally titled “The Free World Network Party”; Free World Network Radio and Free World Network Radio-X (featured at Taintradio.org) are based on the original live music series of alternative music which I ran from 1991 through 1999 off and on in NYC at various venues such as Fez, Wetlands, The Pyramid Club and The Knitting Factory. It featured artists such as Jorge Sylvester, Marque Gilmore (The InnaMost), Sharriff Simmons, Marc Edwards, Mathew Shipp and more.
The idea behind the series was to show another side of the musician be it political, technological, spiritual, scientific, business savvy, etc. to bring the public closer to the artist by acknowledging an artist’s other potential usefulness to a community – hence the “Network”.
In 2004, while teaching a podcast class to youth I realized my usefulness to communities that lack streams of technological information such as the power of podcasting (which was up and coming at that time) and how a few youth with this knowledge could benefit from it locally and globally. Of course, I had to become a model as well…not hard considering I’ve always had a great love for radio. So I decided to create a podcast version of the live series and call it “FreeWorldNetworkRadio”.
FreeWorldNetworkRadio features interviews, social commentary, updates on local music scenes such as Black Rock Coalition, Afro-Punk, Jazz, and Hip-Hop. The sounds I play vary from the deepest funk to the most solemn praise music from the far east or west or south or north and whatever I might pick up during the journey – basically, my ears are wide open and l’m always looking for new expressive music with feeling. I feature a great deal of music created and produced by artists I work with as well.
The flow of the show is really based on my feelings at the time of its creation although I do try to remain conscious of the potential listener…
FWNR is also an outlet for my commentary and show of appreciation for radio, the artistry and power of the Disc Jockey aka “the DJ” and the technology that allows us the power to communicate, be creative and share information with one another. So feel free to drop me a line and let me know what else is happening out there, up there, over there and any where…
Just like you, I care about the music and need it in my life!
